So they go in and not even a full minute goes by before one girl is leading a new one out the door. I unlock the doors, hop out to open the door because this new girl was clearly struggling just to get down two steps from the door to the curb. They hop in, I show them how to lock the door and position myself between the door and my car waiting for the third girl, who was “just behind us on our way out”. The girl comes out the door backwards, with a guy in a snapback cap and a polo shirt(collar thankfully un-popped) sorta following her out arguing with her. She gets to me and he’s still with her. The bouncer is starting to notice, and this dude is not backing off at all. So I step in and place myself between him and my car, and tell him to go have another drink, this was no longer worth it. He gets in my face, and tries to puff is chest and all but eventually backs off and goes back to the bouncer. I’m putting my seatbelt on when I see the bouncer shaking his head at the guy, who has his hands out to his sides in what I call “what the hell Jesus”pose. It looked like he was getting denied re-entry to the bar. We lock the doors again, and scoot on out of there. About halfway there, I ask the girls if the friend is OK, if they want me to check her out to see if there’s any cause for concern.
I was at that point in training to be an EMT, so I was adept at taking vitals, and had a rough idea what red flags to look for. They think it’s a good idea, and we pull over and I just do a quick set of pulse/respiration/pupils/blood pressure on her. Her respiration is slow, her pulse is in the 40’s and her pupils are extremely sluggish, so I advise that we either take her to the hospital 7 minutes up the road or call an ambulance, which would take about 10 minutes just to get there. The girls opt for a direct ride to the hospital, and I drop them off at the ER with my first set of vitals written on a piece of paper from a little notebook I keep in my car. I also include my number and an offer for a free ride back in the morning if they want it. They text me the next afternoon and thank me, tell me that the tests they ran at the hospital found a date rape drug in her system. I’m really glad they cared enough about their friend to leave the party they were at, pay around $15 to $20 for a round trip Uber, risk violence at the hands of a drunk, rapey dudebro, all for a girl they’d apparently only known for a week or two.
